Authorities Warn of Fraudulent Traffic Violation Notices Circulating in Transylvania County

TRANSYLVANIA COUNTY, N.C. — The Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam involving fraudulent “Notice of Default” letters that falsely claim to be issued by the state over unpaid traffic violations or tolls.

According to officials, the letters are designed to appear legitimate and often include alarming language intended to pressure recipients into taking immediate action. The notices may reference urgent enforcement measures, such as license suspension, court proceedings, or collection efforts.

Authorities say a key indicator of the scam is the inclusion of instructions directing recipients to scan a QR code or submit payment immediately. In many cases, the documents also contain vague or inaccurate court information that does not correspond with any real case.

“These notices may look official, but they are intended to create panic and prompt quick payment without verification,” the sheriff’s office said.

Residents who receive such a notice are urged not to scan any QR codes or send money. Instead, officials recommend verifying any citation or court date directly with the local Clerk of Court or contacting law enforcement for assistance.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that legitimate court officials and law enforcement agencies do not request immediate payment through unsolicited notices or QR codes.

Anyone with questions or concerns about a suspicious notice is encouraged to contact the sheriff’s office directly. Authorities also urge residents to share the warning to help prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
